Witten scraps controversial laser pigeon deterrent after backlash from activists

Witten's controversial pigeon deterrent system, BirdFree, has been discontinued. Mayor Lars König announced the decision on 22.9, following criticism from animal protectionists and a withdrawal of approval from the Ennepe-Ruhr district.

The system, installed at Witten town hall on 17.9, aimed to deter pigeons using a laser and reflective surfaces. However, the veterinary office later assessed that it may cause animal damage, although it's legally unobjectionable.

The district council formed a decision-making body in 2022 to approve such systems, but it was dissolved in March 2023. Meanwhile, alternative methods like diagonal boards are being examined. Starting 24.9, the BirdFree containers will be closed with lids, and a dismantling date will be arranged. The costs for installation and dismantling are still being determined.

Mayor König had a conversation with an animal protectionist who criticized the measure, expressing understanding for animal protection concerns. City pigeon lovers have also stepped up to help reduce the pigeon population for city cleanliness and animal protection.

The BirdFree pigeon deterrent system has been removed from Witten town hall. The city will now explore alternative methods to manage the pigeon population, with the support of local pigeon lovers and animal protectionists.
