Yakutia Launches Live Ice Drift Monitoring to Combat Spring Flood Risks
A new live video feed now tracks key waterways in Yakutia, helping officials monitor ice drift and flooding risks. The system covers major rivers like the Lena, Indigirka, and Kolyma, as well as critical shipping routes from Lensk to Zhigansk. Authorities have also expanded ice-blackening operations to reduce hazards during the spring thaw. The live feed is a joint effort between the Rescue Service, Rostelecom, and ArcticTelecom. It allows residents and visitors to watch real-time ice movement on the Rescue Service’s official website. The cameras focus on high-risk areas, including sections near Ust-Maya and Khandyga.
Federal support from Russia’s Water Resources Agency has boosted prevention work in 2026. This year, ice-blackening operations have grown by 161 hectares to weaken ice jams on multiple rivers. The expanded efforts now cover the Lena in Olyokminsky and Namsky districts, the Kolyma in Srednekolymsky district, and the Vilyuy in Nyurbinsky district.
During a recent meeting, officials stressed the need for better coordination during ice drift and potential floods. Republic head Aisen Nikolayev highlighted resident safety as the top priority. Agencies are sharing real-time data to improve response times and reduce risks. The new monitoring system and expanded prevention measures aim to cut flooding dangers during the spring thaw. Residents can now track ice movement online, while agencies work together to manage hazards. The efforts reflect a broader push to protect communities along Yakutia’s major rivers.
