Berlin's B.Z. reinvents itself at 150 with student-led journalism revolution

Berlin’s B.Z. newspaper is set for a major overhaul as it marks its 150th anniversary. From September, the Axel Springer Academy of Journalism and Technology will take charge of its leadership and editorial operations. The changes come under the direction of Miriam Krekel, a long-standing executive at Axel Springer and former editor-in-chief of B.Z. The Axel Springer Academy, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, will integrate B.Z. into its training programmes. A core team of experienced editors will work alongside rotating groups of journalism students from the Academy. This new structure aims to blend professional expertise with fresh perspectives.

The relaunch will focus on data-driven reporting, investigative journalism, and AI-supported hyperlocal news. Krekel, who has led digital transformation at *Bild* and *B.Z.* since joining Axel Springer in 2002, will oversee the transition. She previously headed *B.Z.* as editor-in-chief from 2017 to 2022. As part of the restructuring, job cuts in the low double digits are expected. A voluntary severance programme will be offered to ensure a socially responsible approach to staffing changes.

The revamped B.Z. will begin production under its new model in September. The paper’s shift towards digital innovation and student collaboration marks a significant change in its long history. The voluntary severance scheme and focus on modern journalism techniques will shape its future direction.
