City cancels €14.5M Huttenschule expansion due to declining student numbers
Plans to expand Huttenschule on Roßbachstraße have been scrapped by the city administration. The €14.5 million project, originally set for completion in late 2028, will no longer proceed. Officials now argue that falling student numbers make the extension unnecessary. In December 2022, city leaders had confirmed the expansion would go ahead. Construction was due to start in mid-2027, with the new facilities intended to ease overcrowding. But the administration has since reversed its position, pointing to a long-term drop in pupil numbers.
The newly merged school will now adopt a different approach. The Roßbachstraße site will house only upper secondary students, while the Am Steintor location takes grades 5 through 10. This split removes the need for extra space, according to officials. Minor renovations at Roßbachstraße will still take place, but only after the 2030/31 school year. These changes will adapt the building for older students. The decision has left parents and teachers uncertain about managing resources in the meantime.
The cancellation of the €14.5 million project marks a shift in the city’s education planning. With no new construction, the school will rely on reorganising existing space. The move follows projections of a shrinking school-age population over the coming decade.
