14leafs Launches €50M Fund to Fuel Lower Franconia's Startup Boom

A new venture capital fund called 14leafs has launched in Lower Franconia to support early-stage startups. The initiative aims to tackle a persistent problem: promising local ideas often fail to grow due to limited access to early funding. Backed by key regional players, the fund will focus on turning research and innovation into scalable businesses.

The fund is a collaboration between the University of Würzburg (JMU), Sparkasse Mainfranken Würzburg, and StellaVent Capital. Together, they plan to raise up to €50 million for investment. Jochen Schönleber, deputy CEO of Sparkasse Mainfranken Würzburg, described 14leafs as a strategic move to boost the region’s economic growth.

14leafs will target startups in life sciences, health, deep tech, and digital technology. Investments will range from €100,000 to €1 million, focusing on pre-seed to Series A stages. Beyond funding, the initiative provides startups with business expertise, a strong network, and connections to further investors. Prof. Dr. Paul Pauli, President of JMU, highlighted the fund’s role in bridging research and entrepreneurship. Over its lifetime, 14leafs expects to support between 40 and 50 startups. The goal is to keep value creation, jobs, and talent within Lower Franconia rather than seeing them relocate. The long-term vision is clear: to establish the region as a hub for tech-driven startups. By nurturing high-growth firms locally, 14leafs aims to strengthen the area’s position in innovation and business development.

With its first investments on the horizon, 14leafs plans to accelerate the growth of early-stage companies in Lower Franconia. The fund’s combination of capital, expertise, and networking could help transform local research into thriving businesses. Over time, this may lead to more jobs, economic activity, and a stronger startup ecosystem in the region.
