Cologne Police test video chat for reporting minor crimes

Cologne Police are expanding their services—alongside online reporting and in-person filings at stations—by allowing residents to submit criminal reports via video chat. The new option aims to improve the quality of reports and speed up processing times.

A pilot phase, limited to minor offenses such as petty theft, minor fraud, property damage, or insults, will launch on April 27 for residents looking to file reports at the Ehrenfeld, Weiden, Chorweiler, and Nippes police stations. Video chat reporting will be available Monday to Wednesday from 8 AM to 4 PM and Thursday to Friday from 8 AM to 8 PM, excluding public holidays. Using this service could save residents waiting time at the station, allowing them to handle matters from home instead.

Those interested in using the service must first scan a QR code posted at the stations, which will guide them through a series of questions to ensure their case is suitable for video reporting.

Requirements for Video Reporting:

  1. Only minor offenses qualify, such as theft, fraud, property damage, or insults.
  2. No physical evidence can be submitted via video.
  3. The crime must have occurred in Cologne or Leverkusen. For online offenses, the complainant must reside in one of these cities.
  4. The service is currently available only in German.
  5. Users must present a valid photo ID (e.g., national ID card or passport).
  6. Data protection terms must be accepted.
  7. Users must have the necessary technical setup ready.

Once all conditions are met, users enter a virtual waiting room. When an officer becomes available, the report is processed in a private video chat.

During the trial phase, capacity will be limited, and some technical issues may arise. Participants will help refine the process by sharing feedback through a post-reporting survey.
