Dangerous driver arrested in Mainz after assault and reckless spree
A 21-year-old man was arrested in Mainz on Friday after a string of dangerous driving incidents and an assault in the Mombach district. Police intervened following reports of reckless behaviour, including collisions, near-misses, and a physical confrontation with a passerby. The incidents began at 12:45 p.m. when the suspect, driving a red Toyota RAV4, became involved in an altercation with a cyclist on Kreuzstraße. He then accelerated aggressively, putting a pedestrian in danger.
By 2:40 p.m., the driver had stopped on An der Wieslücke street, where he engaged in a verbal dispute with several people. During the confrontation, he struck an unidentified passerby in the face with an open hand. Shortly after, he fled at high speed into Karlsstraße, a low-traffic zone, further endangering pedestrians. Police later spotted the vehicle at a petrol station and pursued the suspect. A brief chase ended near an apartment building, where officers apprehended the driver. Authorities are now appealing for witnesses, particularly those who saw the altercations or the dangerous driving between 12:45 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. They are also seeking the pedestrian endangered on Kreuzstraße, the cyclist from the initial dispute, and the passerby assaulted on An der Wieslücke.
The suspect remains in custody while investigations continue. Anyone with information about the incidents or the man’s driving behaviour has been urged to contact the police immediately. The case involves multiple offences, including assault and reckless endangerment.
