Halle's Yom HaShoah Ceremony Honors Holocaust Victims and Modern Tragedy

A solemn ceremony will take place in Halle (Saale) on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, to mark Yom HaShoah. The event honours the victims of the Nazi genocide of European Jews and commemorates the 83rd anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Organised by the Jewish Community of Halle and the TOS Leipzig evangelical free church, it will include a march, a rally, and a tribute to those killed in recent violence. The day’s events will begin at 5:00 PM at the synagogue on Humboldtstraße 52. Dr. Judith Marquardt, the city’s Deputy Mayor for Culture and Sports, will attend on behalf of the Lord Mayor. Inside, memorial candles will be lit, and the names of Jewish victims from Saxony-Anhalt murdered by the Nazis will be read aloud. The ceremony will also honour those who died in the Hamas pogrom on October 7, 2023.

At 6:00 PM, Dr. Marquardt will join the March of Life as it sets off from the synagogue. The procession will move toward the Market Square, where a rally is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM. Under the theme *Remember. Reconcile. Stand with Israel and Against Antisemitism*, she will address participants gathered for the occasion. The TOS Leipzig evangelical free church has coordinated the march, bringing together community members, officials, and visitors. The evening’s programme reflects both historical remembrance and a call for solidarity in the face of ongoing antisemitism.

The commemoration will unite the city in reflection and action. Memorials, speeches, and the march will highlight the enduring importance of remembering past atrocities while standing against present-day hatred. The event concludes a day of tribute to lives lost and a reaffirmation of shared values.
