Deadly kayaking accident near La Amistad Dam claims two lives

Mexican Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco expressed regret over the death of Roberto Enríquez de la Garza, deputy director of operations for the Mexican Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), in Acuña, Coahuila.

According to local media, Enríquez de la Garza was kayaking on the Rio Grande near the La Amistad Dam when the accident occurred. A 17-year-old minor also died in the incident.

The head of Mexico's Foreign Ministry (SRE) offered his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

The IBWC confirmed Enríquez de la Garza's death and extended its sympathies to his wife, children, relatives, and friends.

Reports indicate that the kayak overturned in a strong current.

Carlos Flores Diego, director of Civil Protection in Acuña, stated that the group had entered the river in kayaks and capsized near the first hydraulic weir, about one to two kilometers downstream from La Amistad Dam.

Coahuila state prosecutors have not released further details. The body of the Mexican official was recovered by U.S. authorities after being found on the American side of the river, while the other victim's body was located on the Mexican side. Both were discovered around 11 a.m.
