Explosion under car sparks violent clash between Meiningen police and residents
A loud explosion under a car in Meiningen led to a violent confrontation between police and two residents on March 20, 2026. Officers were called after a 25-year-old driver reported a firecracker detonating beneath his vehicle at around 2:50 p.m. on Robert-Koch-Straße.
The first responding officers from the Schmalkalden-Meiningen Police Department quickly located the apartment linked to the incident. As they approached, a 43-year-old man opened the door but showed little cooperation. His 65-year-old father, who had earlier been seen removing an explosive device from the street, then joined him in resisting the officers.
The situation escalated when both men attacked the police, forcing the officers to restrain them. Additional reinforcements were called to bring the confrontation under control. Despite the altercation, the witness's car suffered no damage.
During questioning, the 65-year-old refused to provide his identity. After assessment, both men were released from custody pending further investigation. Records show no similar violent clashes between residents and police in Meiningen over the past five years, with most incidents involving minor disturbances handled through de-escalation and routine questioning.
The investigation into the firecracker incident remains ongoing. Police confirmed the device was thrown by the older man, though no charges have yet been filed. Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the explosive's origin.
