Georgia’s pivotal local elections test voter priorities on taxes and energy

Georgia's voters are heading to the polls today, with more than 800 local elections taking place, including two hotly contested races for Public Service Commissioner. Early voting figures show that nearly 9% of registered voters have already cast their ballots. Meanwhile, political action groups and parties are rallying their supporters, with the Georgia Republican Party opposing the 'green' agenda of Democrats.

The Georgia Conservation Voters Action Fund has invested a significant $2.2 million to unseat incumbents in the Public Service Commission races. In the races, incumbent Tim Echols is facing Alicia Johnson, while Fitz Johnson is challenging Democratic candidate Peter Hubbard. The GCV Action Fund's campaign, 'Georgia Clean Power', aims to engage voters and promote cheaper, cleaner power.

Atlanta voters have a crucial decision to make today on a measure that could provide additional property relief to residents aged 65 and above. Fulton County residents will also vote on two property tax referendums, offering a 25% exemption for those aged 65 and above, and a 50% break for those aged 70 and above. Additionally, a proposed ballot amendment could give Atlanta residents over 65 a $50,000 exemption on their Atlanta Public School tax assessment.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, with Atlanta's municipal elections extending until 8 p.m. With early voting numbers indicating strong turnout, the results of these local elections could have significant impacts on Georgia's political landscape and the lives of its residents.
