CDU to fund driving license subsidy for volunteers under 30 - Germany's CDU Proposes Driving Licence Subsidies for Young Volunteers

CDU state leader Daniel Peters has proposed offering financial support to young people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to help cover the cost of a driver's license—but only in exchange for volunteer work.

Amid ongoing debates over the high cost of obtaining a driver's license, Peters, the CDU's top candidate in the opposition for the upcoming state election in September, has suggested a state-funded subsidy tied to voluntary service. Under his proposal, residents aged 30 or younger who have volunteered for at least three years in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania could apply for financial assistance through a new state program.

The regional government could cover up to €2,000 of the costs, Peters said in a CDU statement. The expense of earning a driver's license has risen significantly in recent years, as previously reported by Ostseewelle radio.

The party also aims to strengthen civic engagement through the initiative. The program would apply to volunteer work with any state-recognized organization—including fire brigades, disaster relief services, emergency responders, and other public-benefit institutions, as well as sports, music, and cultural associations. According to the CDU, funding could come from savings generated by increased digitalization in state administration.
