Germany's 'Hotspot Disinformation' project survives federal budget cuts

The 'Hotspot Disinformation' project, a media literacy initiative led by CORRECTIV, will run until the end of 2026 as planned. Launched in early 2025, the scheme was developed in partnership with the German Youth Fire Brigade and the German Fire Brigade Association. Funding for the project comes from a federal program now facing cuts elsewhere. The initiative began in 2024 as a collaboration between CORRECTIV, the German Youth Fire Brigade, and the German Fire Brigade Association. It officially started operations in early 2025, focusing on improving media literacy among young people.

The federal government's 2026 budget allocates €191 million to the wider 'Democracy in Action!' program. However, over 200 projects under this scheme will lose funding by the end of the year. CORRECTIV's involvement remains unaffected, as its funding is limited to the single, time-bound 'Hotspot Disinformation' project. Florence Wild, Chief Development Officer at CORRECTIV, confirmed that the organisation's work on this project is secure. She also noted that CORRECTIV relies mainly on donations from supporters, not government grants. Minister Karin Prien's emphasis on volunteer-led initiatives aligns with the project's community-focused approach.

The 'Hotspot Disinformation' project will continue without disruption until its scheduled end in late 2026. CORRECTIV's funding for this specific initiative remains intact, despite broader cuts to the federal program. The organisation's primary financial support still comes from private donations rather than government sources.
