Giessen’s Year-Long Tribute to Wilhelm Liebknecht Kicks Off in 2026
Giessen is gearing up for a year-long celebration, 'Liebknecht200', to mark the 200th birthday of Wilhelm Liebknecht in 2026. The anniversary year promises a rich programme of events, with a budget of approximately €300,000, including €30,000 from municipal funds. Key supporters include notable organizations such as the Foundation for Sites of German Democratic History and the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
The celebrations will commence on March 29, 2026, with a day filled with encounters, discussions, music, and theater. A five-minute film about Liebknecht’s life, produced by Giessen-based filmmaker Csongor Dobrotka, will be projected onto building facades across Germany. Throughout the year, a special exhibition at the Giessen City Museum will explore Liebknecht’s life and convey democratic values to a younger audience.
Events will not be limited to Giessen. Cities such as Leipzig, Lörrach, Berlin, and Gotha will also host events to highlight Liebknecht’s legacy. The academic conference 'Democracy, Made in Giessen' and the festival-congress blend 'Festigress – Ars Democratica' are among the highlights. Musical performances by 'Die Grenzgänger', a staging of 'Dumme Jahre' at the municipal theater, and 'Conversational Waitering' will spark dialogue on Liebknecht’s themes.
The 'Liebknecht200' celebrations promise a diverse range of events, engaging both local and national audiences. With significant support from various organizations, the anniversary year aims to honor Liebknecht’s legacy and promote democratic values.
