Hit-and-run crash in Berlin leaves one hospitalized after THC-positive teen flees
Incident No. 1571
A traffic accident left one man injured in Berlin's Hellersdorf district yesterday afternoon. According to preliminary findings and witness statements, an 18-year-old was driving a car along Hellersdorfer Straße toward Alte Hellersdorfer Straße at around 5 p.m. At the same time, a 23-year-old was traveling on the adjacent lane of Hellersdorfer Straße in the same direction. As the 23-year-old attempted to turn left onto Hellersdorfer Straße toward Riesaer Straße, he collided with the 18-year-old's vehicle. The impact sent the 23-year-old's car careening onto the central island of Hellersdorfer Straße.
The young man sustained head injuries in the crash and was taken to a hospital by emergency responders, where he remains under observation. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old fled the scene unlawfully, heading toward Alte Hellersdorfer Straße. Police officers later located the teenager's abandoned vehicle during a search of the immediate area, finding it parked on Cottbuser Straße. On a judge's order, the car was seized as evidence and transported to a police impound lot.
Authorities tracked down the 18-year-old, who does not hold a valid driver's license, at his registered address. A voluntary on-site drug test returned positive for THC, prompting officers to take him into custody for a voluntary blood sample. He was released on foot later that evening.
The case has been handed over to the specialized traffic crimes unit of Police Directorate 3 (East) for further investigation.
