Keir Starmer eyes cabinet role for Sadiq Khan after London mayoral vote
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly considering a cabinet position for Sadiq Khan after London's mayoral election in May. The move comes as Labour seeks to strengthen its unity following recent shifts in party direction. A government insider claimed the proposal could address potential losses to the Green Party and Reform UK.
Starmer's leadership has focused on centrist policies since taking over from Jeremy Corbyn. After resolving internal disputes over antisemitism and party strategy, Labour secured a landslide victory in the July 2024 general election. His handling of the Iran crisis has also drawn praise from senior figures like Wes Streeting.
Streeting, a key ally, has warned against any leadership challenges after the May elections. He argued that voters would reject Labour if the party appeared divided. Meanwhile, Downing Street officials suggest Khan's potential appointment would reinforce Starmer's position amid local election pressures. Khan has not yet confirmed whether he will run for re-election as London mayor. Instead, he remains focused on delivering policies for the city. A Downing Street spokesman dismissed the cabinet reports as 'speculation' but did not rule out future discussions. Separately, Streeting defended his decision to release private WhatsApp messages with Peter Mandelson. He also clarified that the NHS's £330 million data deal with Palantir does not involve patient records.
The proposed cabinet role for Khan follows Labour's efforts to consolidate power after recent electoral successes. If confirmed, the appointment would mark another step in Starmer's strategy to maintain party cohesion. The final decision is expected after London's mayoral vote in May.
