Left Party rallies against €20 billion health insurance cuts ahead of Cabinet vote
Berlin (dpa) — The Left Party plans to stage a protest outside the Chancellery on Wednesday against the government's proposed health care reforms and other policies of the black-red coalition. Party leader Ines Schwerdtner suggested in Berlin that taking to the streets may be necessary to pressure the government.
Schwerdtner criticized Health Minister Nina Warken's (CDU) plans for statutory health insurance, arguing they would shift costs onto citizens. She also called for protests on May 1, stating, "We will not stand by while the welfare state is attacked with a chainsaw."
On Wednesday, the Cabinet will meet at the Chancellery, where ministers are expected to advance the statutory health insurance reform. Warken's proposal includes cuts totaling around €20 billion.
