Left Party's Controversial Candidate Faces Backlash Over Anti-Semitism Allegations Ahead of Elections

Yunus Cakar, the Left Party's mayoral candidate for Osterholz-Scharmbeck, has faced criticism over his involvement in a controversial demonstration. In April 2023, he addressed a Frankfurt rally where participants waved Palestinian flags and keffiyehs. His remarks and past activities have raised concerns about anti-Semitism within the party.

The event was part of the annual Al-Quds Day march, a protest against Israel established by Iran's regime in 1979. Cakar's role in organising and speaking at such rallies has drawn scrutiny ahead of the September local elections.

During the Frankfurt demonstration, Cakar declared that Israel's actions represented 'the first genocide in human history unfolding so clearly.' His speech, alongside his moderation of the event, energised the crowd of around 750 people. Hesse's domestic intelligence agency had earlier warned of anti-Semitic rhetoric linked to the protest.

Cakar has a history of participating in Al-Quds Day marches and rallies supporting Iran's Islamist regime. His public statements have repeatedly targeted Israel, aligning with his broader political stance. Within the Left Party, his nomination has triggered internal debates, particularly after the party's state conference in Lower Saxony condemned 'actually existing Zionism' in March 2023. Critics highlight his past remarks, which include Holocaust relativisation and expressions of support for groups linked to terrorism. While no direct public statements by Cakar on Germany-Iran relations or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are documented, his alignment with Iran-backed causes remains a point of contention.

Cakar's candidacy continues despite the backlash over his involvement in pro-Iran and anti-Israel demonstrations. The Left Party now faces questions about its stance on anti-Semitism as the September elections approach. His role in the Frankfurt rally and previous activism have cemented his position as a polarising figure within the party.
