Leftist MEP Martin Günther battles far-right influence in EU climate policy
Martin Günther, a 43-year-old economist and member of Die Linke, has spent over six months in the European Parliament. Since replacing Carola Rackete in September 2023, he has focused on climate policy as part of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety. Günther views fighting the far right as a key priority in his parliamentary work. He warns that alliances between conservative and far-right groups often weaken progressive policies and push through far-right agendas. His concerns extend to the EU's budget plans, where he opposes merging funding streams at the expense of climate action.
His home state of Brandenburg currently receives around €350 million a year in EU funds. Under proposed reallocations, this figure could drop by at least half. Günther also criticises rising military spending, fearing it will divert money from social, environmental, and cohesion programmes. Economically, he argues that major corporations and industrialised nations drive most greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, he notes, low-income groups suffer the worst effects. His goal is an economic shift that balances climate protection with social fairness.
Günther's work centres on climate justice, fair economic reform, and countering far-right influence. His opposition to budget cuts for climate and social policies reflects these priorities. The outcome of his efforts will depend on broader political shifts within the European Parliament.
