Life in Prison for Killer of Aniah Blanchard After 2019 Murder Shocked Alabama
A man has been convicted in the 2019 murder of 19-year-old Aniah Blanchard, whose disappearance shocked Alabama. Ibrahim Yazeed now faces life in prison without parole after jurors rejected a capital murder charge. Sentencing is scheduled for May 7.
Blanchard vanished in October 2019 after being seen on surveillance footage at an Auburn convenience store with Yazeed. Her SUV was found two days later, its interior covered in blood. Investigators later discovered her body in a wooded area of Macon County the following month.
An autopsy confirmed she died from a gunshot wound. Prosecutors revealed she was shot while sitting in the passenger seat of her own car. Her body was then dumped in the woods, where she was shot again in the head. Yazeed was arrested shortly after Blanchard's vehicle was located. While he avoided the death penalty, the jury's decision ensures he will remain in prison for the rest of his life.
The case drew widespread attention, adding to growing media coverage of violence against young women in Alabama in recent years. Blanchard's murder, like other high-profile incidents, has kept the issue in the public eye. The sentencing next month will mark the legal conclusion of a case that began with her disappearance over four years ago.
