Mönchengladbach's Fire Service Celebrates 123 Years of Growth and Innovation

Mönchengladbach’s professional fire service marks its founding on May 15, 1901. What began as a small team with a single station has since expanded into a modern operation. Today, the service employs around 100 staff daily and handles nearly 180 emergency calls on average each day. When the fire service launched in 1901, Mönchengladbach had roughly 60,000 residents. The new department introduced structured shift systems, service rules, and updated emergency procedures. By 1906, a telegraph room was added to speed up communication and cut response times.

Over the decades, the city’s population grew to more than 270,000. The fire service evolved alongside it, now working closely with volunteer firefighters and relief organisations. Their combined efforts ensure coverage across a much larger urban area. To encourage new recruits, an information booth on May 15 will outline career opportunities. Young people can learn about full-time roles and voluntary positions within the service.

The fire service’s growth reflects Mönchengladbach’s development from a mid-sized town to a major city. With nearly 180 daily callouts, the team’s expanded resources and partnerships remain vital. The upcoming booth aims to attract the next generation of firefighters and volunteers.
