Monika Neuhöfer-Avdić officially reelected as Lörrach's mayor after legal review
Lörrach Deputy Mayor Election Deemed Lawful by Supervisory Authority
The election of Lörrach's deputy mayor was conducted lawfully, the responsible supervisory authority has now confirmed. On Thursday, March 26, 2026, Mayor Monika Neuhöfer-Avdić was reelected by the city council. Following a complaint, the Freiburg Regional Council (Regierungspräsidium Freiburg) reviewed the process and concluded that there was no evidence of wrongdoing.
The investigation was triggered by a submission from a city council member raising doubts about the legality of the procedure. According to the city administration, however, the election was prepared based on a valid council resolution. Under this resolution, the administration—together with the Council of Elders—was authorized to pre-select candidates from the applications received.
Out of three applications, only one candidate—the incumbent—met the requirements. She was then proposed to the city council for election. With no opposing candidates, the vote was conducted as an approval ballot by marking a box.
The Regional Council ruled that this procedure was permissible. It also confirmed that the required absolute majority was achieved. The process is now officially considered complete.
