Orbán to step down from parliament but may keep leading Fidesz
Hungarian Politician Awaits Fidesz Party Congress
Hungary's incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has announced he will give up his parliamentary seat but will continue to lead the Fidesz party if its members approve the decision at their upcoming congress, RBK-Ukraine reports, citing Orbán's video address on Facebook.
Orbán stated that the presidium of his Fidesz party had concluded its meeting and decided to "radically reform" its parliamentary faction, which will be restructured on Monday. Gergely Gulyás will head the new faction, while Orbán himself intends to resign his seat in parliament.
"The mandate I received as the leader of the Fidesz-Christian Democratic list is, in fact, a Fidesz parliamentary seat, so I have decided to return it. Right now, it is needed not in parliament but for reorganizing the national movement," said the still-serving prime minister.
A nationwide party meeting is scheduled for next week, while the congress to elect new leadership has been postponed until June.
"For nearly four decades, I have led our community. During this time, we have experienced successes and failures, electoral victories and defeats. But one thing has remained unchanged: this camp has always been the most united and cohesive political force in Hungary, and this unity is what Hungary needs most today," Orbán declared.
He added that the presidium has proposed he continue leading Fidesz, and if the congress approves, he will not refuse.
