Portugal declares historic 2025 budget surplus amid policy debates

Portugal's government has celebrated its 2025 budget surplus as a landmark success. Finance Minister Miranda Sarmento called the outcome a 'major victory' and an 'historic achievement'. She also dismissed criticism from opposition parties over the government's fiscal approach.

Sarmento described the surplus as proof of the government's long-term commitment. She declared that the administration was 'here for the long haul' and would continue its economic policies.

No specific reforms were introduced solely to hit the 2025 surplus target. However, the budget includes 5.97 million euros to cut immigration backlogs by 93% by the end of the year. A full clearance of these delays is expected by 2026. Additionally, 88 million euros from EU recovery funds will support mental health reforms. The minister also criticised opposition claims about the government's fiscal strategy. She argued that their narrative misrepresented the administration's financial management.

The 2025 surplus marks a significant moment for Portugal's finances. Funding for immigration and mental health reforms forms part of the broader budget plan. The government maintains that its policies will deliver lasting economic benefits.
