Rhineland-Palatinate’s Bold New Plan to Future-Proof Its Public Libraries
The Library Development Plan (BEP) for Rhineland-Palatinate was unveiled in spring 2025, with a key event held on November 5 at the State Library Centre (LBZ) in Koblenz. This plan, available online, aims to strengthen libraries' roles in society and ensure their future readiness.
Minister of Culture Katharina Binz underscored the significance of libraries as centres of knowledge, exchange, and encounter for diverse communities. The BEP, developed through extensive stakeholder dialogue, sets clear guidelines to bolster libraries and maintain their central societal function.
The strategic framework focuses on seven key objectives: reliable information access, digital transition, inclusive spaces, sustainability promotion, cooperative impact expansion, public visibility enhancement, and future-readiness assurance. Key priorities and concrete actionable measures for local communities were identified during the event, moderated by strategy consultant Andreas Mittrowann.
The BEP, accessible at https://lbz.rlp.de/en/about-us/publications/details/publication/library-development-plan-for-the-state-of-rhineland-palatinate, serves as a roadmap for advancing public libraries in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its implementation, discussed at the LBZ event, will secure and further expand libraries' roles in society.
