Court Extends Stepfather's Pretrial Detention by Two Months Pending Trial
A court in Novosibirsk has upheld the pretrial detention of a man accused of the brutal murder of his stepson. The tragic incident occurred on March 11, 2025, in a village in Omsk Region. According to investigators, the 28-year-old man fatally beat his two-year-old stepson, Sasha*, causing his death.
The stepfather allegedly kicked the boy with force as he stood in a doorway, blocking his path into the house. When the child began crying, the man continued the assault, inflicting a severe traumatic brain injury. Paramedics, called by the boy's mother, attempted to save him, but he died at the scene, the Omsk Regional Investigative Committee reported.
The suspect was taken into custody and placed in a pretrial detention center. Investigators later revealed that he had subjected the child to systematic abuse for over a year, while the boy's mother—aware of the violence—failed to intervene. The toddler was starved, his weight dropping to just 10 kg (22 lbs), and was beaten for taking food without permission. The 27-year-old mother admitted in court that she had tried to protect her son but had not reported the abuse to police, despite previous incidents:
"Once, my husband beat Sasha at night when he woke up and started walking around. I was afraid of him—he threatened that if I spoke out, he would take my children away and give them to his relatives," she said on the talk show"Male/Female."Investigators allege the boy wascovered in bruises and scratchesand had been hospitalizedthree times* with injuries.
The stepfather, Andrei, now faces charges under Article 105, Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code (murder of a minor with exceptional cruelty). The child's mother has been charged with negligence in parental duties, while a juvenile affairs inspector is under investigation for dereliction of duty leading to the boy's death. In March 2026, Andrei's trial began after prosecutors approved the indictment.
The case has been referred to the Omsk Regional Court for substantive proceedings. The charge carries a potential life sentence, prosecutors confirmed.
The court has now extended Andrei's pretrial detention by two months while the trial continues. His defense team appealed the decision to the Fifth Appellate Court in Novosibirsk, which ruled on April 23:
"The defense petitioned to replace detention with house arrest, but the Omsk court's ruling stands, and the appeal has been denied," the Fifth Appellate Court's press service stated.
