Russian driver faces prison after refusing sobriety test in Susuman crash

A 58-year-old driver in Susuman, Russia, has been charged with drunk driving after refusing sobriety tests. The incident follows a road accident, and authorities have opened a criminal case due to the driver's prior convictions for similar offences. His vehicle has since been seized by police.

Traffic officers responded to a collision in Susuman, where they discovered the man behind the wheel of a foreign-made Toyota. When asked to take a breathalyser test, he refused. Further checks revealed he had previous administrative and criminal penalties for driving under the influence.

The case has been filed under Part 2 of Article 264.1 of Russia's Criminal Code. This specific charge applies to repeat offenders and carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years. Official records for Magadan Oblast show no other documented cases of this nature so far in 2024. Authorities have impounded the suspect's car as part of the ongoing investigation. The driver remains under investigation while prosecutors prepare the case for court.

The suspect faces a prison term of up to three years if convicted. His refusal to comply with testing and his history of offences led to the criminal proceedings. The case will now proceed through Russia's legal system for a final ruling.
