Saxony-Anhalt Honours Firefighters for Decades of Bravery and Service

Two firefighters and a Red Cross volunteer have been honoured for their long-term dedication to public safety in Saxony-Anhalt. Interior Minister Dr. Tamara Zieschang presented the awards during the annual service review of the Saale district's chief fire officer. The ceremony recognised decades of service and acts of bravery in emergency situations.

Michael Spieß, from the German Red Cross in the Merseburg-Querfurt district, received the Silver Fire and Civil Protection Medal of Honor. This award is given for at least 25 years of outstanding service or exceptional courage during emergencies. Karsten Stephan, station chief in Gröbers for the Volunteer Fire Department Kabelsketal, was also presented with the same medal.

Thomas Junge, a member of the Volunteer Fire Department Mücheln, was awarded the Fire Brigade Clasp. This honour acknowledges exemplary work in fire department operations or significant achievements during missions. The awards highlight the vital role of both professional and volunteer firefighters in Saxony-Anhalt. While exact numbers of active volunteer units remain unclear, their contributions to fire prevention and civil defence are widely recognised. The ceremony underscored the importance of long-term commitment in protecting local communities.

The recognitions celebrate the efforts of individuals who have spent years ensuring public safety. Spieß, Stephan, and Junge join a long list of emergency responders honoured for their service. Their work reflects the broader contributions of volunteer and professional firefighters across the region.
