Koch: Energy and Defense Technology Offer Opportunities for the North - Schleswig-Holstein's economy surges on defence and green energy growth

Schleswig-Holstein is seeing fresh economic momentum, driven by growth in renewable energy and defence. The state’s prospects look stronger than Germany’s overall sluggish performance, thanks to new investments and military expansion. Local leaders highlight these sectors as key opportunities for future development. The defence industry is playing a major role in the state’s economic boost. A planned order of wheeled armoured vehicles from Finnish manufacturer Patria will directly benefit Schleswig-Holstein. FFG, Patria’s German partner, will handle maintenance and repairs at its Flensburg facility, securing local jobs and expertise.

Construction has already begun on FFG’s new Plant 3 in Handewitt, a clear sign of the sector’s current strength. Meanwhile, the state government is backing TKMS’s acquisition of German Naval Yards, a move that could strengthen Kiel’s shipbuilding capabilities. This takeover may also improve TKMS’s chances of winning future frigate contracts.

The Bundeswehr’s expansion is adding to the momentum. Troop numbers are rising again, and former military sites in Kiel and Boostedt are now under consideration for reactivation. Tobias Koch, leader of the CDU’s state parliamentary group, has emphasised the strong economic potential these developments bring to Schleswig-Holstein. The combination of defence contracts, military expansion, and strategic acquisitions is setting Schleswig-Holstein apart. Renewable energy growth further supports the state’s economic outlook. If these trends continue, the region could outpace Germany’s broader economic challenges in the coming years.
