Sri Lanka’s opposition leader seeks stronger economic ties with India amid recovery
Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa recently visited New Delhi, where he met with Indian ministers and leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit aimed to strengthen the bilateral relationship and explore avenues for economic cooperation, as Sri Lanka works to stabilize its economy following a financial crisis.
During his visit, Premadasa praised India's role in assisting Sri Lanka during its economic crisis, acknowledging the credit lines provided for essential supplies, humanitarian aid, and debt restructuring support. He also described India as an 'indispensable' partner for Sri Lanka's recovery from the triple tragedies of Easter Sunday terror attacks, COVID-19, and economic collapse.
Premadasa's outreach comes as Sri Lanka looks to deepen and dynamize its partnership with India. He called for a more robust relationship during his meetings with Indian leaders, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral ties and economic cooperation.
Premadasa's visit to India underscored the importance of the bilateral relationship for Sri Lanka's economic recovery. With India playing a key role in assisting Sri Lanka during its crisis, both countries are poised to strengthen their partnership, fostering deeper economic cooperation and political dialogue.
