Steinen proposes 50 km/h limit on B317 to reduce traffic noise and congestion
Steinen is updating its noise action plan to tackle traffic noise along the busy B317 federal road. The proposal includes a 50 km/h speed limit between the roundabout and Bernhardstraße, aiming to cut noise and ease congestion. Authorities and residents have weighed in, but the final decision now rests with the municipal council. The B317 sees over 8,200 vehicles daily, prompting Steinen to revise its noise action plan. A key measure under discussion is a 50 km/h speed limit on a stretch of the road, which studies suggest could lower noise levels and improve traffic flow. Residents living south of the train station would likely benefit the most from reduced disturbance.
During the public consultation, two official statements were submitted. However, no changes were made to the draft plan as a result. The Lörrach district office and the Freiburg regional council oppose the speed limit, arguing that the legal grounds for enforcing it are weak. Despite this resistance, Steinen’s municipal leaders remain committed to the proposal. The council will vote on the final version of the Stage 4 noise action plan on Monday, May 19, 2026.
If approved, the 50 km/h limit could bring quieter conditions for nearby homes and smoother traffic along the B317. The council’s decision will determine whether the measure moves forward or faces further delays. Residents and officials alike await the outcome of the upcoming vote.
