Lörrach's €11.4M sports hall plan to replace decaying 1977 facility
Lörrach is planning a new €11.4 million sports hall to replace its ageing facility. The current building, damaged by water leaks, has been partially closed since 2024. A district council vote on 20 May 2026 will decide whether to proceed with construction. The existing sports hall, built in 1977, has suffered from severe water infiltration. Since 2024, one-third of the structure has remained out of use. The proposed replacement will stand on the site of the old underground parking garage.
The new facility will measure 45 by 22 metres, with a ceiling height of seven metres. It will house three full-sized courts, meeting high energy-efficiency standards. Features include natural ventilation, underfloor heating, and a link to the campus district heating system. The roof will also serve as a recreational courtyard, partially covered in greenery.
Construction is set to begin in November 2026, with completion expected by July 2028. The building will primarily serve school sports but will open to local clubs during evenings and weekends. Public funding of €600,000 has been earmarked for the project, bringing the total estimated cost to €11.4 million. If approved, the new sports hall will provide modern facilities for both schools and community groups. The design focuses on sustainability, with energy-efficient systems and green spaces. The district council’s decision in May will determine whether the project moves forward as planned.
