Syria’s rebuilding begins as one million refugees return home in 2025

Syrians are now prioritising the rebuilding of their homeland, with interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa leading the efforts since taking office in January 2025. This comes as the UNHCR reports that one million refugees and two million internally displaced Syrians have returned home.

The German government has expressed support for these developments. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has stated that refugees should return if the reasons for their flight no longer exist. Thorsten Frei (CDU) has backed these remarks, understanding the emotional impact of witnessing home-torn regions firsthand. Wadephul has not questioned the necessity of repatriations, aligning with the German model of assistance that encourages refugees to return to their home countries when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

With the Syrian government focusing on reconstruction and a significant number of refugees and internally displaced persons returning, the path towards rebuilding Syria is underway. The German government's stance on repatriation aligns with these developments, supporting the return of Syrians to their home.
