What's next without Kemmerich? FDP elects new state executive committee - Thuringia’s FDP seeks revival with new leadership after crushing defeats
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Thuringia is set to elect a new state executive board this Saturday, aiming to regroup after recent electoral disappointments. The party, which failed to re-enter the Bundestag nationally in February with just 4.3% of the second vote, is now looking to rebuild following a crushing defeat in the 2024 state election.
In Thuringia, the FDP secured only 1.1% of the vote in the state election, leading to the loss of its seats in the state parliament. The party's former leader, Thomas Kemmerich, resigned in September, with around 50 members leaving the party in his wake. However, the FDP in Thuringia still maintains nearly 1,000 members and has gained a few new ones since Kemmerich's departure.
The election of a new state executive board will take place in Probstzella, with around 150 delegates in attendance. So far, only one candidate, Torsten Klöppel, a self-employed retailer from Gotha, has been announced for the chairmanship. Dirk Bergner, who has been serving as interim party leader since Kemmerich's exit, will not stand for election.
The FDP in Thuringia is hoping that the election of a new state executive board will help it to rebuild and regain support among voters. The party will need to work hard to overcome the challenges it faces and return to its former strength in the state.
