Trial begins for 'Knappi Gang' over brutal August 2025 assault in Dortmund
The trial of the so-called 'Knappi Gang' has started at Dortmund Regional Court. Seven young men, aged 17 to 20, face serious charges after a violent attack in August 2025. The group includes defendants with Syrian, Afghan, Eritrean, and German citizenship. The attack took place in August 2025 when the gang targeted a group of five men. They punched and kicked the victims repeatedly, even after they fell to the ground. Diego F. allegedly filmed the assault while Faiz G. and Abdul-Kadir A. carried out the beatings. Abolfazl A. sprayed pepper spray on the victims during the incident.
Police arrested five suspects in early December after reviewing video evidence. A special operations unit (SEK) made the arrests. The gang now stands accused of attempted manslaughter and grievous bodily harm. One member had prior convictions for carrying a prohibited weapon, fare evasion, and aggravated assault. The trial is ongoing, with the defendants set to respond to the charges. The case centres on the filmed assault and the severe injuries inflicted on the victims. Proceedings will continue as the court examines the evidence and testimonies.
