Truck fire disrupts highway after 24-ton waste load ignites near Rennau
A truck fire caused delays on a highway near Rennau after the driver spotted smoke pouring from his trailer. The vehicle was carrying nearly 24 tons of waste when the incident began at around 2:50 p.m. Fire crews from four nearby stations rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze. The driver noticed thick smoke billowing from the trailer while on the highway. He quickly exited the motorway, steering the truck onto a service road. There, he detached the cab from the trailer before firefighters arrived.
When crews from Rennau, Rottorf, Mariental, and Grasleben reached the location, flames were already visible. The trailer’s exterior walls showed clear signs of scorching, and dense smoke filled the air. Firefighters cut through the tarp covering the load and launched a foam attack to smother the fire. After bringing the blaze under control, the driver unloaded the trailer. Firefighters then extinguished any remaining hotspots hidden in the waste. The damaged trailer was flooded with fire-suppressing foam and prepared for transport. Under escort from fire trucks, the vehicle was taken to the Buschhaus waste incineration plant. It was directed to a secure quarantine area for further inspection. The entire operation lasted roughly four hours before crews stood down.
The incident disrupted traffic but was contained without injuries. The trailer and its 24-ton load were safely removed from the highway and transferred to a waste facility. Authorities will likely investigate the cause of the fire in the coming days.
