U.S. unveils bold new dime and coin redesigns for 250th anniversary in 2026
The United States is preparing to mark its 250th anniversary in 2026 with a fresh look for its coinage. A redesigned dime will lead the changes, featuring a new 'Emerging Liberty' theme. Other coins, including quarters and nickels, will also receive special updates to honour the milestone.
The new 10-cent coin will replace the traditional Roosevelt dime, originally introduced to honour the late president for his role in supporting polio research. On the front, the updated design displays a Liberty bust with the inscriptions 'LIBERTY', 'IN GOD WE TRUST', '1776', and '~ 2026'. The back shows an eagle in flight, clutching arrows in its talons, along with the words 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', 'E PLURIBUS UNUM', 'ONE DIME', and 'LIBERTY OVER TYRANNY'.
Nickels will feature dual dates, '1776~2026', while quarters will showcase five new historical designs. The U.S. Mint will also release collectible half dollars and pennies as part of the celebrations. Former President Donald Trump is launching Freedom 250, a nonpartisan group, to oversee the anniversary events. The organisation aims to coordinate nationwide activities marking the country's founding.
The updated coins will begin circulating in 2026, offering a lasting tribute to America's 250-year history. Alongside the new designs, commemorative editions will be available for collectors. The changes reflect a broader effort to honour the nation's past while engaging the public in the celebration.
