Ukrainian woman faces trial for allegedly poisoning partner with thallium sulfate
A 53-year-old Ukrainian woman will go on trial next Tuesday at Deggendorf Regional Court, accused of murdering her partner by poisoning him with thallium sulfate. The case involves allegations of a deliberate poisoning in January 2025, following an affair the victim reportedly had the previous year. A verdict could come as early as May after a seven-day hearing.
Prosecutors claim the woman ordered thallium sulfate online from a Ukraine-based company in November 2024. Two months later, she allegedly used the substance to poison her partner. The victim first showed flu-like symptoms before his condition worsened rapidly, leading to hospitalisation.
Doctors initially misdiagnosed his illness, unaware of the poisoning, and struggled to treat him. He eventually fell into a coma and died from multiple organ failure in January 2025. The trial will hear from 48 witnesses and five expert witnesses, including the victim's daughter as a co-plaintiff. Investigators believe the motive was the victim's affair in 2024, which they argue led to the poisoning.
The trial is set to last seven days, with proceedings beginning next week. If convicted, the defendant faces murder charges in connection with the poisoning. The court's decision may arrive as soon as May, depending on the evidence presented.
