Uttarakhand Assembly’s 25th Anniversary Sparks Debate on Growth and Equity

The Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly marked its 25th anniversary with a special session, during which lawmakers debated key issues like governance, infrastructure, employment, and regional equity. The event honoured former Chief Ministers N.D. Tiwari and B.C. Khanduri for their roles in the state's formation and development.

Congress leader Sumit Hridayesh raised concerns about regional disparity and employment. He noted that only 5% of top posts in the State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL) are held by locals. Hridayesh also highlighted infrastructural gaps, such as the lack of basic facilities in towns like Almora, and criticized the shift from 'sourcing' to 'outsourcing' models.

BJP MLA Umesh Sharma 'Kau', however, expressed satisfaction with Uttarakhand's development progress. He cited increases in veterinary doctors, service centres, and insurance coverage for livestock as evidence of the state's growth. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami committed to building Uttarakhand into a strong, prosperous, and self-reliant state.

The special session witnessed intense debates, with veteran BJP MLA Khazan Dass calling for unity to accelerate growth. He praised the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and recalled the struggle for statehood. Despite differing views, lawmakers agreed on the need for balanced development and improved governance.
