The image shows a large group of people standing in front of a church, with some of them holding musical instruments. There are candles with flames burning on the stands, a carpet on the floor, and photo frames on the walls. On the right side of the image, there is a window, suggesting that the church is a Russian Orthodox church, and the people in the image appear to be celebrating a religious event.

Wenigentaft Honors a Century of Volunteer Firefighting at 31st Florian Day

Volunteer fire departments from Fire District IV gathered last Friday in Wenigentaft to celebrate their 31st Florian Day. The annual event also marked the close of the Wenigentaft Fire Brigade’s centennial celebrations. Organisers, local officials, and firefighters came together for a day of reflection and camaraderie.

The day began with an ecumenical service led by Catholic priest Ulrich Piesche and Protestant pastor Roland Jourdan. Pastor Jourdan highlighted the vital role of volunteer firefighters in safeguarding lives, health, and property. Musical accompaniment was provided by the Motzlar Brass Band, under the direction of Daniel Rausch. Two young members of the Wenigentaft Youth Fire Brigade, Lionell Niebel and Pius Stehling, read the prayers of intercession.

André Hohmann of Vacha opened the proceedings, standing in for District Fire Chief Frank Möller, who could not attend. Among the guests of honour were Martin Henkel, a CDU member of the state parliament, and Johannes Ritz, mayor of the unified municipality of Buttlar. The event was organised with the support of Ritz, Josef Büchel (fire chief of Wenigentaft), and many other volunteers. After the service, a procession moved to the village community centre for the traditional comradeship evening. The district covers fire brigades from the Werratal valley and the Rhön region, stretching from Vacha through Geisa to Dermbach. Hohmann also announced that Vacha would host Florian Day again in 2028, while a host for 2027 is still being sought from within District IV.

The 31st Florian Day brought together firefighters and officials to honour a century of service in Wenigentaft. The event reinforced the community’s commitment to volunteer firefighting and set the stage for future gatherings. Planning for the next celebrations in Vacha and beyond is already underway.
