Wiener Neustadt police uncover €100,000 welfare fraud scheme spanning six years
Police in Wiener Neustadt have exposed a major welfare fraud case involving a 50-year-old man. The suspect is accused of illegally claiming social benefits for over six years, causing financial losses exceeding €100,000. The investigation began after authorities noticed inconsistencies in the man’s welfare claims. Despite being registered as unfit for work, he made frequent trips abroad during the period in question. Officials also discovered that he had repeatedly hidden assets to qualify for higher payments.
The case required cooperation between local police, welfare agencies, and international partners. Evidence gathered confirmed the suspect had been receiving benefits unlawfully since April 2018. Authorities have now referred the matter to the Wiener Neustadt Public Prosecutor’s Office for further action.
The total financial damage from the fraud is estimated at over €100,000. The suspect faces legal proceedings after being formally reported to prosecutors. Investigators confirmed that the case highlights the risks of welfare abuse when claims go unchecked.
