Social Media Dangers: Zuckerberg Defends Meta in Landmark U.S. Trial
Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has defended his company's practices in a high-stakes U.S. lawsuit examining the addictive potential of social media. He testified that Meta no longer sets usage-time targets for its apps and acknowledged that children under 13—despite being banned—sometimes access platforms like Instagram. When detected, he said, such accounts are removed.
The plaintiff, a 20-year-old woman, claims she developed a social media addiction in her youth, leading to severe depression and suicidal thoughts.
The debate over social media risks has also reached North Rhine-Westphalia. State Premier Hendrik Wüst (CDU) and SPD leader Jochen Ott are backing age restrictions, including a ban for under-14s and limited access for older teens.
