Mainz café shrinks outdoor seating after complaint sparks inspection
Café Heberer in Mainz has reduced its outdoor seating after a complaint triggered an inspection. The popular Stadthausstraße venue, part of the Wiener Feinbäcker chain, now complies with its original approved layout. Some customers have expressed frustration over the change. The issue began when a written complaint prompted the regulatory authority to inspect the café’s outdoor space. Officials found that the seating area had expanded beyond its permitted size. After discussions, the operator agreed to scale it back to the legally approved dimensions.
A spokesperson for Wiener Feinbäcker confirmed the adjustment, stating the company was following all relevant regulations. Meanwhile, the city’s spokesperson, Ralf Peterhanwahr, clarified that no new rules had been introduced—only existing ones were enforced.
One local resident, Ursula, criticised the decision in a letter to Merkurist. She called the regulations 'unreasonable' and argued they did little to support the city centre’s vibrancy. The café’s outdoor area now matches its original approved plan. Customers will notice fewer tables, though the business remains fully operational. City officials have reiterated that no changes to outdoor dining rules have been made.
