Roadworks: A7 Closure from Friday, April 24, 7 PM to Monday, April 27, 5 AM

A7 Motorway Faces Full Closure for Bridge Demolition and Resurfacing

From Friday, April 24, at 7 PM to Monday, April 27, at 5 AM, a bridge spanning the A7 between the Rhüden and Derneburg-Salzgitter junctions will be demolished, while a 2.3-kilometer stretch of the road surface will be resurfaced. Both operations will take place simultaneously, according to a press release from Autobahn GmbH.

The A7 will be fully closed in the southbound direction (toward Kassel) between the Derneburg-Salzgitter junction and the Salzgitter interchange, and in the northbound direction (toward Hannover) between the Rhüden and Derneburg-Salzgitter junctions.

Bridge Closed Since December 2024

The bridge slated for demolition is located north of the Salzgitter interchange and carries a municipal road connecting Holle (Hildesheim district) and Binder (Wolfenbüttel district). It has been closed to traffic since December 2024. While plans for a replacement bridge are underway, no construction start date has yet been set.

Before demolition begins on Saturday, crews will spread a sand bed beneath the bridge and install safety measures overnight from Friday to Saturday. Debris will be removed via the closed A7. On Sunday, the sand bed and safety installations will be dismantled, and the roadway will be cleaned.

24-Hour Construction Work

The second major project involves resurfacing 2.3 kilometers of the northbound lane (toward Hannover) between the Bockenem junction and the Salzgitter interchange. The open-porous asphalt (OPA) will be replaced across 35,000 square meters, with the existing layer milled down by up to 4.5 centimeters before new asphalt is laid at the same thickness. Work will proceed around the clock using two large milling machines, two asphalt pavers, and a fleet of 30 trucks in continuous operation.

Milling will begin Friday night, followed by preparatory work and asphalt installation on Sunday.

Additional Work on Monday

The A7 closure will also allow for minor road repairs, tree felling, asphalt and concrete resurfacing, and lane marking. The full closure will end at 5 AM on Monday, April 27, though pavement repairs at the Bockenem junction will continue until Monday, May 4, causing lane restrictions in both directions.

Detour Routes

During the closure, the following detours will be in place:

  • Southbound (toward Kassel): Traffic will be diverted at the Derneburg-Salzgitter junction onto the B6, continuing to the Baddeckenstedt junction, then merging back onto the A7 via the A39 at the Salzgitter interchange.
  • Northbound (toward Hannover): Traffic will be diverted at the Rhüden junction, with two detour options:
  • Route U19: Via B243 toward Hildesheim, then B1 to the Hildesheim junction.
  • Route U21: Via B82 toward Hahausen, B248 toward Hohenrode, then B6 to the Derneburg-Salzgitter junction.

The closure has been announced via LED signs since Wednesday. All motorists are urged to follow official detour signs and avoid seeking shortcuts.
