CDU Conference in Stuttgart Begins on Friday - Mood Test for Merz - CDU gathers in Stuttgart to solidify Merz's leadership ahead of 2023 reforms

Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) will convene its first party conference on Friday since Friedrich Merz became chancellor, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The two-day gathering in Stuttgart aims to define the party's stance ahead of key reform decisions expected this year. On Friday afternoon, delegates are also set to reaffirm Merz as CDU leader. The vote by roughly 1,000 party representatives will serve as a litmus test for the chancellor's performance after more than nine months of the center-right coalition government.

Following an ecumenical church service, the conference will open with remarks, including a welcome address by Manuel Hagel, the CDU's lead candidate in Baden-Württemberg's upcoming state election. Merz will then address the delegates, with further speeches and reports from party leadership to follow. In the afternoon (starting around 3:15 p.m.), the conference will vote on Merz's leadership and the rest of the federal executive board.
