Olympia Team upset with Deutsche Bahn campaign: 'Not the right way' - Deutsche Bahn's Olympic rail pass sparks backlash from German sports leaders
A dispute has broken out between Deutsche Bahn and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) over a rail pass promotion linked to the Winter Games. The campaign offers discounted travel on days when German athletes win gold, but sports officials claim it exploits their success without giving back. The promotion, called the 'trial BahnCard Gold', ran from January 16 to February 5. For as little as €19.90, buyers could travel free on long-distance trains the day after any German gold medal victory. A TV advert for the pass featured well-known winter sports stars, including Olympic and Paralympic champions.
DOSB president Otto Fricke accused Deutsche Bahn of 'ambush marketing', saying the company was using Olympic achievements for profit. He argued that the campaign provided no real support for athletes or grassroots sports. The DOSB filed a complaint but received no response it considered adequate. Deutsche Bahn defended its approach, stating it had 'the utmost respect' for the athletes and did not understand the criticism. The rail operator claimed the promotion was meant to celebrate sporting success, not exploit it. Fricke, however, urged the company to reconsider and invest in sports development instead.
The DOSB’s complaint remains unresolved, and Deutsche Bahn has not changed its position. The rail pass promotion ended as scheduled, but the disagreement highlights tensions over commercial use of Olympic achievements. Sports officials continue to push for more direct support from corporate campaigns.
