Elderly Rodgau man loses €20,000 in cruel phone scam targeting families
An elderly man in Rodgau fell victim to a phone scam on Friday afternoon, losing cash and gold jewelry worth around €20,000 in total. Offenbach Criminal Police (Kriminalpolizei) are investigating and appealing for witnesses.
According to police, the perpetrators called the victim, claiming his son had caused a serious traffic accident and was now in pretrial detention. To secure his supposed release, the callers demanded bail in the form of cash and valuables.
The senior followed their instructions and, at around 1:40 p.m., handed over the money and gold jewelry to an unknown man at an agreed meeting point on Rathenaustraße, near the buildings numbered in the 10s. The courier then fled in an unknown direction.
The suspect is described as approximately 45 years old and dressed entirely in dark clothing—a dark sweater, dark jacket, dark pants, and dark shoes.
Criminal Police are asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the Rathenaustraße area or has information about the described man to come forward by calling +49 69 8098-1234.
Authorities have again warned the public about this type of fraud. Anyone receiving such a call should immediately end the conversation and verify the claims with family members or directly with the police.
