Hanover Police Secure NATO's Steadfast Dart 2026 in Massive Operation

Hanover (ots) On Thursday, February 19, 2026, police deployed extensive forces around Hanover's Old Town Hall to secure a NATO exercise event, "Steadfast Dart 2026." Despite the operation's demanding security requirements, authorities successfully managed the deployment and drew a positive conclusion.

The operation began in the early morning with setup and security measures around the Old Town Hall, concluding late in the evening after guests departed. Its primary objective was to ensure comprehensive protection for both the event and attendees, guaranteeing a safe and uninterrupted proceedings. Police prepared for various scenarios based on pre-established plans, deploying a broad range of protective measures for participants.

The operation involved multiple units from the Hanover Police Directorate and the Central Police Directorate of Lower Saxony, working in close coordination with the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). Temporary security zones were established around the venue, including access restrictions and traffic control measures. While these steps caused some disruption for local residents and businesses, they were deemed essential to safeguard all those present.

Additionally, police monitored and secured public assemblies—both those directly linked to the NATO exercise and unrelated gatherings.

"Planning this multi-week police operation presented exceptional challenges on multiple fronts," said Tobias Giesbert, the incident commander for Hanover's operational sector and a police director. "Beyond the usual rigorous security demands for such events, the temporary elevated risk of espionage and hybrid threats required the implementation of innovative and specialized police tactics and resources."

The Hanover event was part of NATO Exercise Steadfast Dart 2026, which Lower Saxony police—under the overall direction of the Lüneburg Police Directorate—will continue to support until the end of March. A significant portion of the maneuver is taking place at the Bergen-Hohne Training Area (Celle district). As part of the NATO exercise, police are also responsible for public safety and maintaining orderly traffic flow. /ms, os
