Lula's Portugal visit sparks far-right Chega's corruption protests
Far-right party Chega argues that "now is the time to stand up for Portugal," adding that "the corrupt should not be welcomed with state honors but condemned instead." The party also claims that, in its view, neither the President of the Republic nor the prime minister has the courage to take such a stance.
On social media, Chega shared a photo linking Brazil's Lula da Silva to former Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates, captioned with the phrase, "A thief's place is in prison."
The Brazilian president arrives in Lisbon on Tuesday morning, concluding a European tour that included stops in Spain and Germany.
After a working meeting with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, he will be received by his Portuguese counterpart, President António José Seguro.
This is not the first time Lula da Silva's visit to Portugal has sparked backlash from Chega. Two years ago, party lawmakers protested during the Brazilian president's speech at the April 25th Revolution commemorations, while a demonstration also took place outside the Assembly of the Republic.
