Mäc-Geiz files for insolvency but keeps stores open during restructuring
German discount retailer Mäc-Geiz has filed for insolvency under the supervision of law firm AndresPartner. The company announced the move on Tuesday while confirming that all 1,175 employees will receive wages for the next three months through government insolvency benefits. Stores will remain open as the business begins restructuring under a preliminary trustee. This is not Mäc-Geiz’s first financial struggle. The retailer previously filed for bankruptcy in 2010 before being taken over by Austrian firm MTH Retail Group. More recently, in February 2026, Kodi Beteiligungs GmbH acquired the company.
The Halle (Saale) District Court has now approved self-administration proceedings. This means Mäc-Geiz will continue managing its assets while restructuring. The process includes a full review of each store’s financial health, supported by external experts.
As part of the restructuring, some locations will close, and further structural changes are planned. The goal is to secure the company’s long-term competitiveness in the retail market. The restructuring will take place under court-appointed oversight, with wages protected for staff in the short term. Mäc-Geiz has stressed that all stores will operate as usual during the self-administration period. The outcome of the financial review will determine which locations remain open.
